Philipp Schiepek und Lorenz Widauer
BANGERS AND BALLADS
Philipp Schiepek (Gitarre / Deutschland)
Lorenz Widauer (Trompete / Österreich)
Michael Acker (Bass / Rumänien)
Matheus Jardim (Drums / Brasilien)
An appreciation of the supposedly small things and a love of detail - these are two things that the two musicians Lorenz Widauer and Philipp Schiepek have in common. After first getting to know each other musically at the Salzburg Festival in summer 2021 and recognizing these similarities, the idea for a collaborative project was quickly born. With “Bangers and Ballads”, the two now present an exciting program full of joyful playing. "
5/5 stars - you can let yourself fall into this music." Jazzthethik

Philipp Schiepek
Guitarist Philipp Schiepek has a vision: he wants to develop a new, individual sound language with his compositions and his playing. The musician and composer, who lives in Dinkelsbühl, is successfully pursuing this goal. In recent years, the young artist has focused his work on performing his own compositions with his jazz projects and interpreting music for solo guitar.
He has performed with his ensembles at the Berlin Jazz Festival, the Leipzig Jazz Days, the Bach Festival in Köthen, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Prinzregententheater in Munich, the Leverkusen Jazz Days and the Europe Sound Festival in Ankara. Philipp Schiepek's concerts are broadcast on Deutschlandfunk, Bayerischer Rundfunk, RBB, WDR and NDR. A 60-minute live concert, which was recorded as part of the Jazzfest Berlin, was recently streamed on ARTE CONCERT.
Schiepek's debut album as bandleader and composer GOLEM DANCE with New York star saxophonist Seamus Blake was released on ENJA-Records in February 2019. In the same year, he was awarded the Scholarship for Music of the City of Munich and received the “BMW Welt Young Artist Jazz Award” in 2020. Most recently, Schiepek was awarded the Bavarian Art Promotion Prize in the music category.
On April 30, 2021 Schiepek and pianist Walter Lang released the duo album “Cathedral” on ACT Music. Further performances took place at Schwere Reiter Munich, as part of the Konstanzer Jazzherbst and the Kollektivnights Berlin. Philipp Schiepek was a guest solo artist at the Köthen Bach Festival 2022 with the program “Saitenglück -Bach und von Bach inspiriert”. Lorenz Widauer
Lorenz Widauer, born in Salzburg, Austria, is considered “one of the most outstanding talents on the Austrian jazz scene” (Salzburger Nachrichten). His musical journey began with the classical piano until the age of 17, which took him to renowned concert halls such as the Großes Festspielhaus Salzburg or MuTh Vienna. As a piano soloist, he worked with orchestras such as the Salzburg Philharmonic Orchestra and interpreted Mozart's piano concertos through to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. This early exposure to the classical repertoire laid the foundation for his versatile musical career.
After Lorenz decided to switch to the trumpet as his main instrument, he first studied classical trumpet with Andreas Lackner (Innsbruck) and Johann Plank (Vienna), followed by jazz studies with Lars Seniuk and Andy Middleton at the Music and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna (MUK), as well as with Ruud Breuls at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
At the age of 25, he was already touring throughout Austria and Europe as a soloist and sideman in various ensembles of different styles and sizes, such as Christian Muthspiel's Orjazztra Vienna, the Roman Schwaller Quintett or Yvonne Moriel's sweetlife:quartet as well as his own project Chez Fría, a contemporary transdisciplinary ensemble of jazz musicians and interpreters of early music, founded as a project commissioned by the Potsdam Sanssouci Music Festival.
In his newly founded acoustic quartet*, he interweaves different stylistic influences and combines avant-garde sounds with the strong classical tradition of his native Salzburg and the lively sounds of the young jazz scene in New York.
Lorenz was awarded the Hubert von Goisern Culture Prize and won the ARTEDEA competition as well as the Joe Zawinul Award and played with Michael Abene, Joe Gallardo, Frank Delle, Miho Hazama, Robert Landfermann, Jonas Burgwinkel, Gileno Santana, Nils Landgren, Allen Vizzutti, David Helbock, Philipp Schiepek, Lorenz Raab, Fabian Rucker, Anna Buchegger, Joris Dudli, Mario Gonzi, Oliver Kent among many others.
